We are working to put all of the old Linux Outlaws episodes back on the site — Fab explains why the process is taking so long

As part of the transition to the new Bytemark server, I am working to migrate the rest of the Linux Outlaws episodes in our back catalogue. Currently, we have all of the show back to episode 170 online again. Migrating the last 169 episodes will take a while as I don’t have the time at the moment to do it when I also have to edit the show. It’s not a very straightforward process and to get it done, Dan has to edit the show so I can spend that time on the migration. Since Dan is currently also very busy, things are progressing slowly.

I just wanted to reassure you that we are working on it and that it will get done eventually. It’s not something anybody can help us with — unless you want to give us enough money so we can quit our day jobs. Just hang in there and be patient. I will let everyone know on the show as soon as we have all of the episodes back on the site.

Sixgun Productions is now sponsored by Bytemark and hosted on their new Big V cloud hosting service

I am very happy to announce that Linux Outlaws and the whole Sixgun Productions network are now proudly sponsored by Bytemark. Dan and I have been of the opinion that Bytemark are a great company for a long time, not least since they have supported OggCamp and LugRadio Live in the past. Recently, they have donated a server to Debian and have also helped spread the word about the Yorba Foundation’s fundraiser for Geary.

When our previous hosting service Linode was hacked, losing control my credit card info in the process, we talked to Bytemark about moving over to them and they graciously offered to host us for free in return for promoting their BigV cloud hosting product. I think that is a pretty good deal, especially since the move to the new server was very quick and their whole setup for BigV seems to work flawlessly from what I can tell so far. They are also a local business from the UK and the people I have met personally from the company are all extremely nice and reasonable. For all of these reasons, Dan and I saw no problems whatsoever accepting sponsorship, especially since it might mean we can stop asking for monetary support from listeners at some point in the future.

As far as the shows are concerned, you should notice no difference at all aside from a small audio bumper we will start including at the top of each episode. Together with the banner on the main page and the mention in the site footer, that is all that will change. And you hopefully will be able to enjoy a speedy and secure service from our server, of course.

~ Fab

We have relaunched our blog — Fab explains the reasoning behind this and what to expect going forward

Hello everyone! It has been a while since Sixgun Productions has had a blog. For a long time, we have kept you up to date with the latest from the studio via social media. First exclusively on our, now defunct, identi.ca account and now through Google+ and via @sixgunwire on Twitter. While we still plan on updating you about new episodes and other important events through those channels, two things have become clear to me that need to be fixed in my opinion.

First off, two accounts confuse people as to where the most up-to-date information will be available. To remedy this, I have come up with a plan that involves the social media accounts and the blog complementing each other. Secondly, not everyone is on every social network. Some people prefer Twitter, some Google+, some are only on Facebook and some only use free software alternatives. Because of this, it is impossible to guarantee important information reaches everyone without posting on all of these services — which is something we do not have the resources for. The way to fix this, of course, is to use an old fashioned, self-hosted blog. I had shut our original blog down some years ago because I felt pressure to put content on it and did not have enough time available to do so. With this relaunch, I want to go back to the roots, albeit without an expectation to provide content on a regular basis.

In hindsight, all of this seems obvious but for me it was a trial and error experience. You have to remember that we run this network in our (increasingly rare) free time and often experiment with new technologies and throw things at the wall to see if they stick. We do this, rather than planning everything out beforehand, because it is more fun that way (if you do something in your spare time it should be fun, after all) and also because we frankly do not have the time and resources to plan everything out meticulously. In any case, in the following, I will detail the new plan I have come up with.

All important, official announcements from Sixgun Productions will get a post on this very blog from now on. These are things that most likely also benefit from a more wordy post than a 140 character Twitter message. Links to these posts will, of course, be shared on the above mentioned Twitter and Google+ accounts. Aside from important messages like that, there probably will not be a lot of other content on the blog at this time. Dan and myself are both pretty busy at the moment and the fact that I am writing all day in my day job usually means that when I am coming home at night the last thing I want to do is sit down at a keyboard to type more than 140 character blurbs. That being said, I’ll try to give you behind the scenes impressions and some other (hopefully) interesting tidbits where I can.

Quick announcements, such as when we release new episodes or announce live streams, will still happen on Google+ and Twitter. If you absolutely do not want to miss anything, following on Twitter is probably the best idea as that is where I post the most things — simply for the reason that it is by far the easiest and usually gets good traction, too. I also post on Twitter when things break or if we have any last minute announcements. If you do not have a Twitter account, you can still go to twitter.com/sixgunwire and read everything without being subscribed. But be assured that, if something big happens, I will tell you about it on the blog — even if it is only after the fact, though.

Anyway, enough babbling on. I hope the fact that we have a blog again helps with spreading information about the network more effectively and gives you something to link to permanently for announcements as well as a way to easily find them. Feel free to leave comments with suggestions and tell us what you think. Have a nice Sunday!

~ Fab
