So you're saying that the end of the world will take 3 days?
I was hoping for a quicker demise.

You've never been to Norfolk have you?

As someone on the Infinite Monkey Cage podcast pointed out, the Maya used a calendar that consisted of 20 months of 18 days per month ...
Yes that's right the Mayan year was 360 days ...
So that means the Maya couldn't actually predict the end of the YEAR accurately, never mind the end of the world!

At the risk of colluding in a major derail, I lived in Norwich when I was at university and loved it. The north Norfolk coast is quite unique.

Hold on a minute...why are we even discussing the end of the world. The more restrained amongst us would obviously view the demise of Steve Jobs as a cultural super nova, but that's actually a heresy,..any fool knows that the world literally ended when Steve Jobs died...

Years and all that are arbitrary measurements, but watch this anyway, absolutely hilarious! big_smile

You went to the UEA? Unless you did math I feel sorry for you...
And no, it's not like it's unique, it's full of shitty English seaside towns like any other place in the country--except that a flood is imminent as well. Wells-Next-The-Sea is pretty decent though, at least there is a jazz festival there which I used to go to. This was 4 years ago so I'm not sure if it still goes on.

I've been to Norfolk VA, many times. As a truck driver I'm not a big fan of the whole Virginia beach,Norfolk area. The layout of the interstates are pretty screwed up.

Surely you mean Norwich University in Vermont? That's the only one I've ever been to. Which as it happens, isn't in Norwich, Vermont . . .

Why is that?..Because someone from thousands of miles away across a big ocean(yea, it's an ocean, not a frikking pond) doesn't know about your little town in the middle of a wilderness?

can't we just all be friends?

Probably some API tweaks.  We'll see a few additions to optimize performance on the latest generation of processors.  Some new drivers will be added.  Oh wait, did you mean for free software in general?

Re: 2012 Predictions

Back to predictions:
Unfortunately, the CERN/Gran Sasso superluminal neutrino will turn out to be a measurement error ("unfortunately" because that FTL star drive is probably going to remain impossible ... still causality will be maintained, so that's good smile)

The Higgs Boson will definitely be proved to exist.

Oh, and Secure Boot will be the death knell for small distros unless political pressure can be brought against Microsoft (and the release model of many distros will be problematic too).

But since many of these distros are pointless vanity projects, perhaps not entirely a bad thing? Discuss I mean, awaiting shit-storm ...

Having only officially supported distros is something I think the free software community will never accept.  I predict a similar situation to DVD support.  A vulnerability will be discovered and the effect of Secure Boot will only be to add extra cost to new PCs.  Because I don't think pressuring Microsoft will work.  I think it's likely that such a feature will have an on/off switch in the BIOS (or whatever it's called now).

Re: 2012 Predictions

Did that ever work?  Last I recall the Microsoft was going to offer a version of Windows without a browser to satisfy the EU but that got dropped.  My impression was that the EU caved.  Maybe there were some other incidents I'm forgetting.  Seems like a company with Microsoft's market share could just threaten to halt all shipments of Windows to the EU and get whatever they wanted.

Re: 2012 Predictions

There's an old quote that goes "the guerrilla army wins by not losing; the conventional army loses by not winning" (Kissinger unfortunately, but he happens to be right about this).

But the funny thing is in our industry the roles have become reversed! Microsoft seems to be the guerrilla army that wins by not losing, and we who OUGHT to be the guerrillas are the ones who, well, just lose, at least on the desktop.

Fourteen years after United States v. Microsoft apparently "humbled" their chairman in court and forced them to be more co-operative with competitors, and seven years since the EU fined them for anticompetitive practices, MS remains totally dominant and the linux market share could easily shrink even lower than the miserable 1-2% it currently has.

I mean, where are the NEW users of linux going to come from if dual booting is no longer possible in the next generation UEFI BIOS?

Really depressing
