Mike and Fab sit down for three hours to discuss current politics and how journalism is tied up in it. There’s also some Elite Dangerous talk.

We start the show with Fab talking about the Distant Worlds 2 expedition he’s part of in Elite Dangerous.

In the main part of the episode, Mike and Fab discuss current affairs and how the changing journalism landscape is influencing all of our lives. Things we mentioned:

Seth Abramson’s definition of metajournalism:

My Twitter feed is what’s called “metajournalism” — a metamodern form of post-internet digital journalism that acknowledges that we all have too much information to process daily. Instead of despairing, however, metajournalism tries to find a way to see and use all available information to make better journalism. How does metajournalism do this? By seeing and using the entire field of information on a given subject — say the Trump-Russia investigation — whether the information comes from the United States or elsewhere, from print media outlets or digital outlets, from a verified Twitter account or a New York Times article from a decade ago. The idea is that, as long as all of the information that is seen by the metajournalist is accurate, it can be used to reconstruct false narratives into accurate ones. We’ve already found this to be true time and time again in the Trump-Russia investigation: conventional journalists, pressed for time and faced with a tsunami of digital news sources, are unable to see the entire field of information on the topics they’re writing on before they write about them. The result is that they miss information or connections that many of their readers — having seen a different part of the field — don’t. Unfortunately, when this happens many readers presume bad faith on the part of the journalist. “How could you have gotten that fact wrong!” they cry. “Either you’re biased, or you’re a liar!” By comparison, the metajournalist presumes good faith on the conventional journalist’s part, while acknowledging that conventional journalism makes it inevitable that any given reporter will miss a substantial sector of the field of information they’re working within.

After all of this, you probably have a lot to digest. We do end the show quickly, but do address some of your feedback from the past few weeks.

Matt sent us a picture of the Ultramarines he’s painted because the show got him into Warhammer 40K.

Dave and Fab discuss Amazon’s Bosch, Netflix’ Lost in Space and Marvel’s Infinity War.

First off, some news: Pillars of Eternity II is out and looks like it’s shaping up to be as great as its predecessor. Fab is looking forward to playing it a lot, but has no clue when he can find the time because he’s still playing Battletech a lot.

In other news, Elite Dangerous for the Mac is dead for technical reasons.

Fab has been watching Bosch, a cop show on Amazon starring Titus Welliver. He also reviews Lost in Space on Netflix. Dave really likes Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Dave’s been to the cinema and has watched Avengers: Infinity War. You will be shocked to discover that he enjoyed it very much.

We wrap up the episode with some feedback from our awesome Discord server.

GNR 57 – Primarch Planner

We’re freezing in Hamburg, Birmingham and Dublin under the sway of The Beast from the East. To keep ourselves warm, we fight about women Space Marines and Divinity: Original Sin II.

It’s very cold, so we discuss our various cultural means of dealing with THE BEAST FROM THE EAST.

Fab’s been creating beautiful wallpapers from maps and fighting Pro 7, no sorry PRO SIEBEN, on Twitter. Meanwhile, Mike and Dave are discussing feminist Space Marines.

We also discuss the “Legion of Dave” by Leakycheese. Also: Sisters of Battle represent!

We’ve been putting it off for way too long, so now we finally talk about our opinions on, by many accounts the best game of 2017, Divinity: Original Sin II.

Fab mentions The Crate & Crowbar‘s D&D session. Oh yeah, and #4feldherren is back!

Elite Dangerous: Beyond is out and brings some new content. Part of that is better missions and a very, very sexy ship. Contrary to what Fab said on the show, you don’t need an Alliance naval rank to buy it. Still, it’s confusingly named the Alliance Chieftain.

Just look at that ass!

We revisit the Passion Planner. Apparently it is the best selling personal organiser on US Amazon now.

As is traditional, we end the show by talking about your feedback. And remember: Read The Shadow over Innsmouth, kids!

Show Notes

Fab and Dave celebrate GNR’s second birthday, bring you the relevant geek news and talk Warhammer 40K and Elite Dangerous.

We start the show with some geek news:

EA’s stock price is fucked because of loot boxes.

Top NSA hackers are as stupid as the next person some times.

  Hutton Orbital claims another victim.

  Linux Journal closes its doors.

  Django 2.0 is out!

Geek News Radio is now two years old! Fab’s been reflecting on it in a post on the new Sixgun blog.

Dave has has invented Warhammermas and went on a trip to Warhammer World. He tells us how much fun that was. The bastard.

In the meantime, Fab’s been laughing at this hilarious Rainbox Six thread on Reddit.

Fab had a week off and started a deep space exploration mission in Elite Dangerous.

In other news, Joakim wants to go cuddle with the polar bears. Help him out!

Dave’s been emo about Netrunner and Star Citizen is now selling virtual land that doesn’t exist.

We end the show by talking about your feedback. Thank you for the nice words in response to Fab’s blog post.

Dave’s friend Yue joins us on the show to geek out about EVE Online. We also talk Dark Tower and a bit of Warhammer 40,000 of course.

At the start of the show, Fab gushes over the new Dark Tower movie which is coming soon.

Elba and McConaughey are already having fun on Twitter with it. Fab’s re-reading the books in preparation.

Apparently, BioWare is scaling down the studio responsible for Mass Effect: Andromeda. We kind of predicted this. In Warhammer news, Fab’s finished reading Fall of Cadia and Dave has bought Shadow War: Armageddon. And GW is now actually funny.

These days, Dave is explaining EVE Online to GQ.

And because he’s so knowledgeable on this, Yue and him are putting on an EVE event in Manchester later in the year. And you’re all invited!

We chat about this and also about EVE Fanfest, which both Yue and Dave visited. And there’s plenty of other EVE Online talk, of course. Join Omi Galactic. Or even better: Play Elite. (Yeah, Fab’s writing the show notes. Harr harr!)

We end the episode by addressing your feedback.
