One of the most requested appearances in GNR history comes to pass as Dan joins us for a Linux Outlaws revival, discussing the recent Open Source Summit and IBM buying Red Hat.

We’ve convened an emergency Linux Outlaws meeting to discuss IBM buying Red Hat. Yes, that’s right! Dan is back. The triumphant return of the lost son of Sixgun podcasts.

Something Fab forgot to mention last episode was, that Geek News Radio is now available on Spotify. Hurrah!

We talk a bit about what Dan has been up to during the last few years. He also explains, how he accidentally started an open source project with MakeSpaceLive.

We then talk about the Open Source Summit in Edinburgh, which Dan attended. A lot of the stories end up being about the bars of Edinburgh, though. Which should get you right back into the old Linux Outlaws vibe. Dan caught up with some old friends while being up there as well, which is nice. We also mention the Linux CoC discussion from our previous episode.

People have requested an “emergency Linux Outlaws because of the Red Hat / IBM deal. And since Dan happens to be on the show anyway, we are happy to oblige. We discuss what we know about the deal and how we think it might affect Red Hat and there myriad open source projects. We also speculate on how it might affect IBM itself. During the discussion, Fab mentions the new MongoDB license and Bradley Kuhn’s opinion of it.

Since this show was recorded before episode 72 was released and comes as a bit of a surprise for everyone, we have no feedback this time around. You can, however, send us some on this episode via Twitteron GitLab or by joining the Sixgun Discord and talking to us directly.

It’s been some time, but we are back. Fab and Dave talk Magic the Gathering, Rise of Industry and Linux kernel shenanigans. Fab also reviews Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

We’ve been away for a while, mostly because Fab was launching Hollywood Outlaws and because of that is currently rebuilding the Sixgun website. He’s also been really busy with work. Since he’s leaving soon for a holiday in the US, expect the episode draught to continue for a bit. We promise we’ll make up for the missed episodes at some point.

Our first topic this time is Doctor Strange, which Fab has finally seen. Dave reviewed it back on episode 27.

In the main part of the show, we discuss the code of conduct for the Linux kernel and Linus Torvalds’ sudden change of heart concerning sweary emails.

Dave revisits Two Point Hospital which he had mentioned on the show before. Fab, meanwhile, has been getting back into Magic the Gathering, because Dave told him about Magic the Gathering Arena. He’s now enjoying this quite a lot. If you’re interested in Magic or game design in general, Fab recommends the excellent Drive to Work podcast by Magic head designer Mark Rosewater, also known as Maro. He also gave a great lecture on game design at GDC 16.

We then have more games content, as Dave reviews Rise of Industry (which he didn’t like at all) and Fab reviews Shadow of the Tomb Raider which he loved. After we recorded the show, Fab also wrote a long review of the game on his blog.

We end the show by talking about your feedback.

People On This Episode

Show Notes

This time on Geek News Radio: Linus Torvalds calls people “fucking morons”, Dave reviews the Google Pixel 2 and Fab plays XCOM 2: War of the Chosen.

Audio on the last episode was sub-par. This was due to a stupid mistake on Fab’s part. Rest assured, he has been sufficiently punished. Ouch.

Just in case people were actually expecting some news from a show that has this concept prominently featured in its title, we start the episode off with some – for a change:

Linus Torvalds yells at security people. Again. (Fab had some fun with this. Also: Finnish dishwashing racks.)

Session-replay is evil.

Quad9 promises to be a secure DNS.

We evaluate Firefox 57 again. This time after we’ve actually used it.

Dave reviews the Google Pixel 2.

Fab talks about XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. He’s preparing another campaign starring his Twitter friends. If you want to take part, tweet him.

As is our custom,  we end the show with your feedback, including this great meme by NiklasMM the Great:
