Dave’s friend Yue joins us on the show to geek out about EVE Online. We also talk Dark Tower and a bit of Warhammer 40,000 of course.

At the start of the show, Fab gushes over the new Dark Tower movie which is coming soon.

Elba and McConaughey are already having fun on Twitter with it. Fab’s re-reading the books in preparation.

Apparently, BioWare is scaling down the studio responsible for Mass Effect: Andromeda. We kind of predicted this. In Warhammer news, Fab’s finished reading Fall of Cadia and Dave has bought Shadow War: Armageddon. And GW is now actually funny.

These days, Dave is explaining EVE Online to GQ.

And because he’s so knowledgeable on this, Yue and him are putting on an EVE event in Manchester later in the year. And you’re all invited!

We chat about this and also about EVE Fanfest, which both Yue and Dave visited. And there’s plenty of other EVE Online talk, of course. Join Omi Galactic. Or even better: Play Elite. (Yeah, Fab’s writing the show notes. Harr harr!)

We end the episode by addressing your feedback.

Geek News Radio turns one and Char returns. We talk Blood Bowl, Westworld and home-made Baileys.

GNR just tuned one year old and to celebrate, we got Char on again. But before we get to her topics, we cover some errata from Episode 28: There are indeed penises in Watch Dogs 2, but they are mostly disappointingly small.

In a real surprise move, No Man’s Sky actually got an update. Also, the Advertising Standards people are saying the developers didn’t mislead buyers. Interesting assessment, that one…

Char says we should all go along to the Global Game Jam in January. She says it’s no excuse if we can’t program. Damn. She’s also been playing HackMUD and Moon Hunters. Dave’s been playing Heroes of the Storm (aka. Dota for People with Jobs). Meanwhile, Fab’s been covering the Telekom crisis in Germany.

If you are part of Cicada 3301 please contact us. We have something you want.

Pulling her full weight as an Irishwoman, Char brings us her recipe for Vegan Baileys. You can also make it with real milk, if you hate cows:

Vegan Baileys (yield: ~4 cups)

Ingredients:

– 2 cans of coconut milk
– 1/2 cup brown sugar
– 3/4 cup strong coffee, or to taste
– 3/4-1 cup Irish Whiskey, or to taste
– pinch of salt

Instructions:

1. In a medium or large pot, add the cans of coconut milk and whisk. Now whisk in the sugar. Bring to a low boil, stirring frequently. Simmer for about 8-10 minutes, while stirring frequently, until it cooks down and thickens slightly.
2. Remove from heat and stir in the espresso or coffee. Don’t have a coffee maker? Just buy a cup from the coffee shop and use that. Add in espresso/coffee to taste.
3. Add a pinch of salt and finally the whiskey, to taste. I added about 3/4 + 2 tbsp of whiskey and it was strong, but so is the original! Make it as strong or weak as you prefer.
4. Store in sealed jars and serve over ice, with coffee or tea, or in baked goods. The whiskey and espresso settles to the bottom of the jar slightly, so give it a good stir before using.

Dave then mutters something about “these fucking plastic packs that Netrunner comes in these days”, whatever that means.

Next, we talk Blood Bowl. Glorious Blood Bowl! Fab’s really proud of his Gorbad Greenskins and the new edition of the game is great and Games Workshop seems to finally come to its senses. They even look like they are beginning to get the internet. Including the part where they are having some fun with it.

A brave new world. Amazing.

We also talk books. Including Blood Bowl books, the new Expanse book and Dave tells us how he liked Hyperion and Redshirts.

Finally, Char pitches Westworld to us. Fab’s still missing Yul Brynner, but wants to see it now.

To cap off the show, we cover your feedback.

Including this website that analyses Metal album covers. Also this band. Wow.

Well, that’s it for this year, folks. We’ll see you again in 2017. Until then: Hack that planet.

Show Notes

This time around, Dave and Fab bring you a lot of hobby talk: Blood Bowl, Warhammer and White Dwarf. But they also talk tech news and spaceships.

Trump it is. We’re all screwed. The End Times indeed. In other bad news, the great Leonard Cohen has died.

There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in

Leonard Cohen

But we also have some good news: Season 2 of The Expanse is coming to Syfy on 8 February.

If you want to know what the current date in 40K notation is, Fab’s got you covered. Also: EVE Online is now free! Wooohoo! Maybe Fab will finally stick with it now. Their berets leave much to be desired, though.

EVE Berets

In other news, hell has frozen over! And a Hello Games designer who used to work for Molyneux is combo-chaining clusterfucks, he has gone to work at Star Citizen.

Next, it’s hobby talk. There’s a brand new Warhammer community site and Total Warhammer is coming to Linux. We talk Blood Bowl and Fab reviews the November issue of White Dwarf. Meanwhile, GNR collaborator Joe Ward has been featured on the GW site as part of #PaintingWarhammer.

Joe #PaintingWarhammer

Dave is now a fan of Microsoft’s tech support. He’s not a fan of upgrading his Ubuntu server, though. Also: Ghost in the Shell.

Show Notes

We’re bravely ignoring the fact that the world is ending soon to play Civilization VI and talk about spaceships and Blood Bowl.

The End Times are upon us, but at least Dave has fixed his PC. Therefore we can talk about many interesting things while we are waiting on the world to be completely fucked over in the wake of the US presidential election.

Dave tells us of his experience at EVE London, which to be honest just sounds like an excuse to get drunk. The Expanse is now on Netflix and Fab’s been watching it again in all it’s glory, which he talks about at length. He also gives away the code to unlock him as a playable character in The Curious Expedition.

Explorer Fab

We discuss the Metalcaptcha and Tim “The Machine” Wiese, who is fearsome, no matter what sport he plays.

Tim Wiese

Meanwhile, the Internet of Shit goes nuclear and some folks are kickstarting a Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill game called Slaps and Beans. Of course, Fab has to explain to the Brit who the hell Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill are…

We move on to talk about Doctor Strange and the new version of the Blood Bowl board game, which you can pre-order on Saturday. In the main part of the show, Fab and Dave have a long conversation around the good and bad things about Civilization VI.

Show Notes

The multi-talented Char joins us to talk writing for Divinity: Original Sin 2, board games and right-to-left geekery.

Bolt Thrower announced that the band is no more. Was it us?

Fab thanks @amokleben for sending him coffee and enthuses over Alestorm.

DGR 2016 Hamburg

He also took part in the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Hamburg over the weekend – it was a lot of fun. The bikes stretched all across the Köhlbrandbrücke.

Köhlbrandbrücke

Dave and Char discuss Duelyst. It’s a card game. Without actual cards. Dave then reports of his experience at EVE_NT in Nottingham.

Apparently, Games Workshop now does live streams. Live Streams that are eleven fucking hours long.

And they are releasing Russ. Or is it Fulgrim in a wolfskin suit? Bard probably has an opinion on that.

In the spirit (ha ha) of getting even more drunk on the show, we discuss game-themed cocktails. If you want to get it burning, use Stroh Rum. Once the mist clears, you’ll have a hell of a Hangover.

Dave and Char recommend some nice board games. Some of them don’t even use boards. Fab would like to try some, but sadly, he has no friends. He also tells the story of how Risk nearly destroyed his life twice.

Divinity: Original Sin II

Since Char is a writer on Divinity: Original Sin II, we discuss the game. And its name. Which is almost as bad as Chasm: The Rift. Fab and Dave get chastised for having made their own character. The thing to do is pick Ifan – and the Oud, of course.

Fab and Dave discover that they don’t read as much fantasy books as they should. Char is writing a fantasy book herself and recommends some. There’s a handy list on a Kickstarter update from Larian Studios. It isn’t fantasy, but Dave bough the novel Hyperion live on the show on Char’s recommendation order.

We end the episode with Fab ignoring your feedback.

Also: Cheeky Nandos.
