GNR 56 – Terrible at Torpedoes

Can't Handle Torpedoes

Dave has been playing World of Warships and Fab reviews Subnautica. We also discuss how The Orville stacks up against Star Trek: Discovery.

Fab has started a German PC games podcast with his mate Martin. It is called Kantenglättung Deluxe. They are aiming to release a show every month.

FOSS Talk Live tickets are on sale right now. Dave will be there, Fab probably not since he’s a fucking slacker.

We start the show off with some news:

Firefox is starting to promote sponsored pages.

Ubuntu is collecting more user data and apparently everyone is outraged.

These flight sim devs are stealing your passwords if you pirate their planes. German story from Fab (falls du Deutsch sprichst).

In the next segment, we pitch Star Trek: Discovery against The Orville. We both like Discovery, but Dave isn’t very hot on The Orville. Surprisingly, Fab likes both series. They definitely have their flaws, though and we thoroughly talk through these.

Dave has been playing World of Warships and talks about his torpedo woes.

Meanwhile, Fab has put a good 30 hours in Subnautica so he reviews it. Not only is it beautiful, it also has a very engaging story told in a very reasonable way.

In other news, Fab has submitted a story pitch to Black Library.

As usual, we end the show with your feedback. Thanks for sending us messages!

Fab (played by Tom Hardy) and Dave (played by his Labrador).

Show Notes

Before we disappear into the holidays, we deliver a massive episode with the best of what GNR has to offer: A hilarious Mozilla fuckup, a Star Citizen rant, a Star Wars review, our Games of the Year and some video game Warhammer.

As part of the site redesign, Fab has changed the Sixgun logo and GNR album art a bit. We hope you like the new look.

In the news:

Mozilla made a lot of people really angry with a Firefox / Mr. Robot publicity stunt.

Crytek is suing Star Citizen over the CryEngine.

Fab won the #4Feldherren Turtle Race. Joe still has a huge box of shame.

Fab got an iPhone 7 as a replacement for his dead Nexus 5X. Dave reviews Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He liked it, but you probably already guessed that. Fab still can’t be bothered.

We discuss our Game of the Year. Dave’s runner-ups are: 5. Deep Sea Adventure, 4. Divinity: Original Sin II, 3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and 2. XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. Fab’s runner-ups are: 5. Prey, 4. The Signal from Tölva, 3. Heat Signature and 2. Divinity: Original Sin II.

Dave’s winner is Warhammer 40.000 8th Edition.

Fab’s winner is Total War: Warhammer II.

Fab reviews his game of the year: Total War: Warhammer II. He really, really likes it.

We revisit our predictions for 2017 from the beginning of this year. We’ll give fresh predictions for 2018 in the first episode of the new year. This episode was long as it is at this point.

For the last time in 2017, we address your feedback. Including a weird discussion of playing card suits. We will be back in January of 2018. Until then, have a merry Christmas and a bloody good party to ring in the new year!

Show Notes

This time on Geek News Radio: Linus Torvalds calls people “fucking morons”, Dave reviews the Google Pixel 2 and Fab plays XCOM 2: War of the Chosen.

Audio on the last episode was sub-par. This was due to a stupid mistake on Fab’s part. Rest assured, he has been sufficiently punished. Ouch.

Just in case people were actually expecting some news from a show that has this concept prominently featured in its title, we start the episode off with some – for a change:

Linus Torvalds yells at security people. Again. (Fab had some fun with this. Also: Finnish dishwashing racks.)

Session-replay is evil.

Quad9 promises to be a secure DNS.

We evaluate Firefox 57 again. This time after we’ve actually used it.

Dave reviews the Google Pixel 2.

Fab talks about XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. He’s preparing another campaign starring his Twitter friends. If you want to take part, tweet him.

This Elite gamer group probably has the best logo known to man and Thargoid.

As is our custom,  we end the show with your feedback, including this great meme by NiklasMM the Great:

You must also heed the following message by Big Man Tyrone, Supreme President of Kekistan. Remember, this podcast has its own army.

Show Notes

Fab and Dave talk about the new Firefox release, the movie Murder on the Orient Express and review the game Heat Signature.

Firefox has released what they say is their “biggest update ever.” We evaluate it, based on having used the new version for about five minutes.

Fab has seen the new Murder on the Orient Express and liked it a lot. Kenneth Branagh’s moustache should get an Oscar.

Dave hasn’t seen the new movie but still thinks he prefers David Suchet as Poirot.

As promised, we review Tom Francis‘ game Heat Signature. Unsurprisingly, we really like it. Even though it can be punishing as hell.

Fab would like to point out that he unlocked the Everything Gun before it was cool.

We end the show with you feedback. Including the fact that X1101 likes Nikola and this fucking thing:

What. The. FUCK.

Show Notes

We wish you a happy holiday and deliver to you the third GNR which is also the last episode of 2015. The show should be back on the air at the beginning of January, if everything goes according to plan. In this episode, we talk more about The Expanse, about M.C. Escher, Elite Dangerous: Horizons and about Mozilla’s plans, or lack thereof, for both Firefox OS and Thunderbird. We are not in much of a Christmas mood but we’re trying to fix that with alcohol. To that end, Fab’s having König Pilsener and Dave’s drinking Cats Whiskers.

There’s scepticism about Star Wars and the Star Trek trailer.

Dave says you gotta see the M.C. Escher exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London if you can. Fab points out that ole M.C. kinda looked like John McAfee. We also discover that we have no idea what tessellation actually is.

Fab has been playing Elite Dangerous: Horizons and it is glorious. He’s been writing about it too. Doesn’t the Keelback look like the Defiant? Here’s a list of all the ships in the game. The big dong-shaped one is just a fan mockup, though. Of course it is…

Meanwhile in EVE, Mordu’s Legion has declared war on the Serpentis mercenaries.

Still on a massive Expanse bender, Fab talks about the books this time. He’s in the middle of Leviathan Wakes and boy is it a story and a half. It’s an amazing feat of world building and we talk about some of the things that make it special.

Mozilla is giving up on Thunderbird. Firefox OS is also dead. Apparently, they are now“pivoting to connected devices”; as in: The Internet of Shit.

Dominique Tipper is great. Fab is in love with her accent. And we need a Pur & Kleen hoodie from Last Exit to Nowhere.
