Show Notes

Join Dave, Mike, Joe and Fab on an episode full of Warhammer painting. Well, when we say painting, we mean we’re mostly talking about painting instead of actually doing it.

Fab, Dave, Mike and Joe come together to discuss their progress, or rather the lack of such, on their Warhammer 40K painting challenge #4Feldherren. While Dave’s actually been painting, he’s mostly added additional stuff to his commitment. Joe has been painting a lot, but none of it has been for the challenge. Fab and Mike have both progressed tiny amounts.

Joe:

Mike:

Dave:

Fab:

The lads also discuss the return of Necromunda and the new Star Wars miniatures game from Fantasy Flight Games.

We also talk about Ring Raiders for some bizarre reason that really isn’t apparent afterwards. Looks like the Luftwaffe are also fans.

Did Fab mention that he met Sabaton? Oh yeah, and he also bought the tank.

We end the show with your feedback. We have some catching up to do, since we weren’t able to include a feedback section last time. We also did it in record time, because Joe had to go to bed.

Show Notes

Full house on Geek News Radio. We got Mike, we got Char and we got the bants. Lots of bants. And Korean skincare.

We’re starting off the show by talking about drinks and by catching up with what Char’s been up to – among other things the Screenshake festival. She also has a newsletter now. Out of respect for her, there won’t be any The Expanse talk this episode, because… spoilers. Check out these wisdoms from Avasarala in the meantime.

Dave has a message for Jono Bacon. Fab updates everyone on what’s been going on with the EDRPG: i.e. a huge copyright cockup. Also: The Commanders update is coming to Elite. Mike’s been enjoying the game lately and has been trying to recruit his friends to join him.

Dave played a lot of board games when he visited Char. They talk about some of them, including Deep Sea Adventure and Mechs & Minions.

For people who used to listen to Linux Outlaws, Fab gives a short heads-up on what’s been happening with LiMux in Munich. This degenerates into a political discussion about Trump and the state of the world right now. Mike recommend the book It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis.

Mike recaps some of the latest developments with Warhammer 40K, including The Gathering Storm.

Follow Frame Shift on Twitter.

Char explains Korean skincare to the guys. It involves snail goop, I shit you not. Check out Chok Chok Glow and also YellowyCream on YouTube.

Getting bored by now? Make your own Trump tweet. Sad.

Dave tries to get everyone to watch weird anime like Yuri on Ice, Haikyuu and Psycho Pass. Fab admits that he used to watch Attack No.1 (which is called Mila Superstar in Germany). Also: Disco Metal.

Char says everyone needs to watch Tom Hardy’s Taboo.

As always, we answer your feedback. Use Bytemark.

Show Notes

Geek News Radio turns one and Char returns. We talk Blood Bowl, Westworld and home-made Baileys.

GNR just tuned one year old and to celebrate, we got Char on again. But before we get to her topics, we cover some errata from Episode 28: There are indeed penises in Watch Dogs 2, but they are mostly disappointingly small.

In a real surprise move, No Man’s Sky actually got an update. Also, the Advertising Standards people are saying the developers didn’t mislead buyers. Interesting assessment, that one…

Char says we should all go along to the Global Game Jam in January. She says it’s no excuse if we can’t program. Damn. She’s also been playing HackMUD and Moon Hunters. Dave’s been playing Heroes of the Storm (aka. Dota for People with Jobs). Meanwhile, Fab’s been covering the Telekom crisis in Germany.

If you are part of Cicada 3301 please contact us. We have something you want.

Pulling her full weight as an Irishwoman, Char brings us her recipe for Vegan Baileys. You can also make it with real milk, if you hate cows:

Vegan Baileys (yield: ~4 cups)

Ingredients:

– 2 cans of coconut milk
– 1/2 cup brown sugar
– 3/4 cup strong coffee, or to taste
– 3/4-1 cup Irish Whiskey, or to taste
– pinch of salt

Instructions:

1. In a medium or large pot, add the cans of coconut milk and whisk. Now whisk in the sugar. Bring to a low boil, stirring frequently. Simmer for about 8-10 minutes, while stirring frequently, until it cooks down and thickens slightly.
2. Remove from heat and stir in the espresso or coffee. Don’t have a coffee maker? Just buy a cup from the coffee shop and use that. Add in espresso/coffee to taste.
3. Add a pinch of salt and finally the whiskey, to taste. I added about 3/4 + 2 tbsp of whiskey and it was strong, but so is the original! Make it as strong or weak as you prefer.
4. Store in sealed jars and serve over ice, with coffee or tea, or in baked goods. The whiskey and espresso settles to the bottom of the jar slightly, so give it a good stir before using.

Dave then mutters something about “these fucking plastic packs that Netrunner comes in these days”, whatever that means.

Next, we talk Blood Bowl. Glorious Blood Bowl! Fab’s really proud of his Gorbad Greenskins and the new edition of the game is great and Games Workshop seems to finally come to its senses. They even look like they are beginning to get the internet. Including the part where they are having some fun with it.

A brave new world. Amazing.

We also talk books. Including Blood Bowl books, the new Expanse book and Dave tells us how he liked Hyperion and Redshirts.

Finally, Char pitches Westworld to us. Fab’s still missing Yul Brynner, but wants to see it now.

To cap off the show, we cover your feedback.

Including this website that analyses Metal album covers. Also this band. Wow.

Well, that’s it for this year, folks. We’ll see you again in 2017. Until then: Hack that planet.

Show Notes

Offshore Mike is back for a show all about Heavy Metal: where it came from, how it developed and where it’s at now. As a bonus, Fab reviews The Curious Expedition.

We review Sabaton’s The Last Stand and debate over what the best song on the album is.

The Last Stand

Fab talks about seeing Sabaton live for the first time at Elb Riot and we discuss what Heavy Metal actually is. What does it all mean?

Fab at Elb Riot

Dave then gives a whistlestop tour of the history of Metal: Blues, Rock, The Who and some broken amps, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Punk Rock, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Van Halen… Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal, Thrash Metal, Nu Metal, Deathcore, Metalcore, Retro-Metal and finally Djent.

We look at the worst Metal band logos and Dave mentions an album that is all lore. Mike and Dave think Fab would enjoy Avantasia.

The Chart

Mike poses that Metal is all about going to gigs. And he says it’s not all about angry, white young men either. He then gives his Top 5 Albums That You Didn’t Know You Needed In Your Life:

  1. Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath
  2. Painkiller by Judas Priest
  3. Somwhere in Time by Iron Maiden
  4. Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass
  5. …For Victory by Bolt Thrower

We then do the Sabaton Quizz!

To have something else besides Metal on the show (heresy!), Fab reviews The Curious Expedition which is a great game from two dudes in Berlin. He absolutely loves it! If you are German, he also recommends you read Kapitän Schwandt’s biography Sturmwarnung.

The Curious Expedition

We end the show by reading out your feedback. Including some more details on the Amazon Dash Button.
