Merry Christmas and a happy Brexit, everyone! We wrap up 2018 in style and look forward to 2019 with a massive two and a half hours long show.

After immediately slipping into a Magic discussion with Dave, Fab recommends Springsteen on Broadway on Netflix to everyone because it made him cry. There’s also a great interview with Bruce in Esquire magazine.

Fab gives a quick overview of playing the Battlefleet Gothic: Armada II beta. It looks quite promising.

Games Workshop has started a video series called Angels of Death. Of course it can’t possibly compare to the original.

They’ve also started a 40K podcast and hey, it’s an actual podcast! Like, with an RSS feed! Wonders never cease…

We wrap up 2018 with a look back at the year and our podcasting. We also make some wild predictions for 2019, because history tells us that this must be done.

Mike

  • Death Company Primaris Marines will enter the lore
  • Another Primarch will surface: Russ, The Lion, Fulgrim or Lorgar
  • Primaris Marines will enter the meta as cost reductions have started with Vigilus and Chapter Approved
  • Hollywood execs decide that it is time to reboot the Avengers and make a new Mario Brothers movie
  • There will be a niche market for pre-apocalypse party sets or survival gear in the UK
  • Trump will be impeached or resign

Dave

  • Microsoft won’t buy Canonical in 2019
  • No Deal Brexit is coming
  • Leman Russ will return to 40K

Fab

  • Microsoft will buy Canonical in 2019
  • The only people in the EU who will even notice Brexit are those ordering from Games Workshop or Amazon UK
  • Magic Esports will be very successful and paper Magic tournaments will profit from it
  • Star Citizen won’t come out in 2019

Once again injecting some outlaw flavour into GNR, Dan and Fab talk about GPL Enforcement and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Dan is back by popular demand and brings with him a load of stories of playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Redemption Online. But before we get into that, we discuss the recent GPL enforcement case Hellwig vs. VMware at the OLG Hamburg. The Software Freedom Conservancy is involved as well. As Fab was there in person, he reports from the court proceedings.

Dan then talks about playing RDR2 online and offline. He really emjoys the game but has also been bullied by a posse of no good kids with tricked out weapons. Those kids have it coming, though!

Fab asks the most important question about the game: How good are the horse balls?

We end the show by talking about your feedback, as is customary.

One of the most requested appearances in GNR history comes to pass as Dan joins us for a Linux Outlaws revival, discussing the recent Open Source Summit and IBM buying Red Hat.

We’ve convened an emergency Linux Outlaws meeting to discuss IBM buying Red Hat. Yes, that’s right! Dan is back. The triumphant return of the lost son of Sixgun podcasts.

Something Fab forgot to mention last episode was, that Geek News Radio is now available on Spotify. Hurrah!

We talk a bit about what Dan has been up to during the last few years. He also explains, how he accidentally started an open source project with MakeSpaceLive.

We then talk about the Open Source Summit in Edinburgh, which Dan attended. A lot of the stories end up being about the bars of Edinburgh, though. Which should get you right back into the old Linux Outlaws vibe. Dan caught up with some old friends while being up there as well, which is nice. We also mention the Linux CoC discussion from our previous episode.

People have requested an “emergency Linux Outlaws because of the Red Hat / IBM deal. And since Dan happens to be on the show anyway, we are happy to oblige. We discuss what we know about the deal and how we think it might affect Red Hat and there myriad open source projects. We also speculate on how it might affect IBM itself. During the discussion, Fab mentions the new MongoDB license and Bradley Kuhn’s opinion of it.

Since this show was recorded before episode 72 was released and comes as a bit of a surprise for everyone, we have no feedback this time around. You can, however, send us some on this episode via Twitteron GitLab or by joining the Sixgun Discord and talking to us directly.

Skyr Hipster

It’s a GDPR-themed episode this time on Geek News Radio. Buckle up, there will be rants. Dave’s mad about Ubuntu and Fab wants to blow the EU to pieces for this privacy crap.

Slippers has a new job and is turning into a hipster. He’s wearing linen and drinking skyr. He’s also been putting his recipes on GitHub. With tests! Fab thinks it’s all quark.

Fab does feel old.

Meanwhile, Dave reminds everyone that FOSS Talk Live is soon!

In the news, The Expanse is cancelled. But there is hope. Also: Fab recommends Little Steven’s Soulfire Live! album and is going to see Kiefer Sutherland in concert.

In the main section of the episode, we discuss Efail and Dave rants about a bug with the Ubuntu login screen.

Fab then launches a massive, nuclear rant on the GDPR.

We end the show with your sparse feedback.

Show Notes

It’s the new year and we are back! In this episode, Fab and Dave talk about The Expanse, the death of Ian Murdock and Dave reviews his OnePlus X. Also: rants.

Nobody’s drinking Baileys. Fab’s having Honey Dew, Dave’s drinking Jura Origin.

As you’d espect, we talk The Expanse. Episode 5, Back to the Butcher, just aired. You can follow the cast and crew on Twitter, and you should – they are live tweeting the whole thing and it’s hilarious. SyFy has also uploaded a bunch of 3D models to Thingiverse that you can print yourself.

Dave tells us about Star Wars and why battle meditation is important. He then reviews the OnePlus X, which you have to have an invite to buy, apparently. Le sigh. They also talked about this on Buggered Impedance.

We discuss Debian founder Ian Murdock, who recently killed himself. Even though you really shouldn’t do that.

Dave now likes Fallout 4 more, since he rolled a new character who kills everyone and wears no pants. Dave recommends the anime One Punch Man and also the EVE: Valkyrie comics.

At the end of the show, we answer your questions and read out your feedback. If you are in California at the end of January and are a Linux nut, you might want to go to the SCALE conference in Pasadena.

Our friend Dan’s going under the knife next week. We wish him all the best!
