Show Notes

Fab and Dave discuss Gamescom, the classic games Schleichfahrt and AquaNox as well as hipster blog platforms and Season 2 of The Expanse.

Dave tells us about his holiday is Scotland and how he enabled Let’s Encrypt for his Ghost blog. Fab’s been trying to set up Hugo. Dave’s also compiled a new list of the podcasts he’s subscribed to. We also get into an Android/iPhone discussion for some reason.

Fab reports from Gamescom (even though that’s been over for weeks now), including how saw Sabaton and reported on Angela Merkel opening the trade show. After that week, Fab is really fed up with YouTube influencers now.

Speaking of games, Fab revisits his favourite game ever: Schleichfahrt. This game is known by the horrible game Archimedean Dynasty in the Englisch speaking market. It’s available on GOG.

There were two sequels: AquaNox and AquaNox 2: Revelation. THQ Nordic is now working on a reboot called AquaNox: Deep Decent.

The second season of The Expanse is now on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it already, you should do so immediately. We recap why we like it so much. It’s so much better than Game of Thrones.

Dave bought a Nintendo Switch with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. He’s been enjoying the console a lot.

At the end of the episode we address your feedback.

Show Notes

Google has announced things at its I/O conference that Dave has opinions about, meanwhile Fab’s been busy building an interstellar empire in Stellaris.

The Philly police has been spying on people, pretending to be a Google Street View car – badly. Meanwhile, Idris Elba has been pegged to play Roland Deschain in the Dark Tower movie.

In other news: Linux Mint doesn’t come bundled with codecs any more and Schalke bought a LoL team. With Civ VI and Hearts of Iron IV, there are some great games coming up.

This podcast is now available on Google Play Music, if you’re in the US.

Dave mentions the new Hoops mode in Rocket League and asks Fab why he doesn’t like Eurovision. He then proceeds to rant about all the stupid stuff from Google I/O. Fab says he’ll create a Google Allo account called General von Klinkerhoffen. That’s an ‘Allo ‘Allo reference.

Fab talks about the developer console from hell in Doom and then dives into explaining why Stellaris is awesome. You should definitely read this Eurogamer piece on it, it’s dead funny and brilliantly written. Stellaris also has a 40K mod.

Follow @GamesWerkshop on Twitter, they are very funny. Also follow @MetaSlippers.

As always, we cover your feedback before we wrap up the show.

Show Notes

It’s the new year and we are back! In this episode, Fab and Dave talk about The Expanse, the death of Ian Murdock and Dave reviews his OnePlus X. Also: rants.

Nobody’s drinking Baileys. Fab’s having Honey Dew, Dave’s drinking Jura Origin.

As you’d espect, we talk The Expanse. Episode 5, Back to the Butcher, just aired. You can follow the cast and crew on Twitter, and you should – they are live tweeting the whole thing and it’s hilarious. SyFy has also uploaded a bunch of 3D models to Thingiverse that you can print yourself.

Dave tells us about Star Wars and why battle meditation is important. He then reviews the OnePlus X, which you have to have an invite to buy, apparently. Le sigh. They also talked about this on Buggered Impedance.

We discuss Debian founder Ian Murdock, who recently killed himself. Even though you really shouldn’t do that.

Dave now likes Fallout 4 more, since he rolled a new character who kills everyone and wears no pants. Dave recommends the anime One Punch Man and also the EVE: Valkyrie comics.

At the end of the show, we answer your questions and read out your feedback. If you are in California at the end of January and are a Linux nut, you might want to go to the SCALE conference in Pasadena.

Our friend Dan’s going under the knife next week. We wish him all the best!

Show Notes

We wish you a happy holiday and deliver to you the third GNR which is also the last episode of 2015. The show should be back on the air at the beginning of January, if everything goes according to plan. In this episode, we talk more about The Expanse, about M.C. Escher, Elite Dangerous: Horizons and about Mozilla’s plans, or lack thereof, for both Firefox OS and Thunderbird. We are not in much of a Christmas mood but we’re trying to fix that with alcohol. To that end, Fab’s having König Pilsener and Dave’s drinking Cats Whiskers.

There’s scepticism about Star Wars and the Star Trek trailer.

Dave says you gotta see the M.C. Escher exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London if you can. Fab points out that ole M.C. kinda looked like John McAfee. We also discover that we have no idea what tessellation actually is.

Fab has been playing Elite Dangerous: Horizons and it is glorious. He’s been writing about it too. Doesn’t the Keelback look like the Defiant? Here’s a list of all the ships in the game. The big dong-shaped one is just a fan mockup, though. Of course it is…

Meanwhile in EVE, Mordu’s Legion has declared war on the Serpentis mercenaries.

Still on a massive Expanse bender, Fab talks about the books this time. He’s in the middle of Leviathan Wakes and boy is it a story and a half. It’s an amazing feat of world building and we talk about some of the things that make it special.

Mozilla is giving up on Thunderbird. Firefox OS is also dead. Apparently, they are now“pivoting to connected devices”; as in: The Internet of Shit.

Dominique Tipper is great. Fab is in love with her accent. And we need a Pur & Kleen hoodie from Last Exit to Nowhere.
