Show Notes

Nick Farmer joins us to talk about his book The Survivors, Belter, The Expanse and how to learn a language.

We have fan-favourite Nick Farmer back on the show, star of our most listened-to episode so far. Nick is the creator of the Belter language for The Expanse and also speaks a lot of languages.

But before talking about all of that, we interview Nick about the novella novelette he just published: The Survivors. He provided Fab with an advance review copy and we discuss the story, how he went about writing it and what it may lead to in the future. Also: immortal jellyfish.

We then talk a bit about Season 2 of The Expanse, which just wrapped up. Including Thomas Jane and his hatred of shoes. Finally, Nick gives us some tips on learning languages, as requested by you, the listeners. He wrote some articles on this. You might want to try the Pimsleur method.

If you have questions for Nick for the next time he’s on, get in touch.

Show Notes

It’s the new year and we are back! In this episode, Fab and Dave talk about The Expanse, the death of Ian Murdock and Dave reviews his OnePlus X. Also: rants.

Nobody’s drinking Baileys. Fab’s having Honey Dew, Dave’s drinking Jura Origin.

As you’d espect, we talk The Expanse. Episode 5, Back to the Butcher, just aired. You can follow the cast and crew on Twitter, and you should – they are live tweeting the whole thing and it’s hilarious. SyFy has also uploaded a bunch of 3D models to Thingiverse that you can print yourself.

Dave tells us about Star Wars and why battle meditation is important. He then reviews the OnePlus X, which you have to have an invite to buy, apparently. Le sigh. They also talked about this on Buggered Impedance.

We discuss Debian founder Ian Murdock, who recently killed himself. Even though you really shouldn’t do that.

Dave now likes Fallout 4 more, since he rolled a new character who kills everyone and wears no pants. Dave recommends the anime One Punch Man and also the EVE: Valkyrie comics.

At the end of the show, we answer your questions and read out your feedback. If you are in California at the end of January and are a Linux nut, you might want to go to the SCALE conference in Pasadena.

Our friend Dan’s going under the knife next week. We wish him all the best!

Show Notes

Here we are, we made it to broadcast number two and you better take a step back because Fab is on the Bullenschluck. Dave really wants princess cake, even though he thinks it’s from Denmark when it is actually from Sweden – it does look amazing, though. On our first proper episode, we talk about Fallout 4 and the awesomeness that is The Expanse.

Fab thinks Fallout 4 is possibly the best game ever made. For Dave, it’s mostly annoying. His rants on the annoying bits are really funny, though. What we can both agree on, is that the robo-butler is great. And he can say a fuckton of names.

We obsess about The Expanse, both the new TV series and the books. The story of how it all came about is pretty amazing. If you want to keep up with what’s going on with the series, the books and the fans, subscribe to the subreddit. Dave wants more three point landings, though.

Dave also thinks you might also want to read the new Dan Abnett book. Speaking of Warhammer 40,000 and Games Workshop, they apparently don’t treat their IT guys very well. We do treat our listeners somewhat better and read out some of your feedback on our first episode.

In virtual space news, EVE Online, which has massive fights, gets more ships. Elite: Dangerous, which has massive expeditions, gets planetary landings. Elite is very beautiful, too.
