Show Notes

Fab and Dave fight the vagaries of global internet connections to bring you a chat about The Dark Tower, Spider-Man, Sabaton and the medium of games streaming.

Fab’s move to Hamburg is complete and he now has the old Linux Outlaws studio setup going again, which should improve our audio quality. Sadly, you won’t get a better show this time around, because our internet connection decided to dick us around instead. Well, next time, thanks to #fibre4dave, everything should be perfect however. Fingers crossed.

Before we get into the main topics, Dave recommends the Triforce podcast, which has apparently replaced the old Yogpod.

Sabaton has teamed up with Wargaming.net to produce a tank-filled video for their song Primo Victoria.

There’s now also a tank of the same name in the game. It comes with the Sabaton guys as crew!

Necromunda is back. Dave doesn’t understand. He though Shadow War: Armageddon was replacing it. Very confusing. Fab’s been watching The Dark Tower and reviews it. Spoilers, obviously. Fab thinks McConaughey as The Man in Black is the best thing since Tom Hardy in Taboo.

In the meantime, Dave’s seen Spider-Man: Homecoming and gives his review of that movie. Speaking of Tom Hardy, Fab can’t wait to see him as Venom.

We end the show with a chat about games streaming and how we think it’s going to change the future of entertainment. No feedback this time, as our connection has been rapidly deteriorating to shit all throughout the show. Check us out on YouTube!

Show Notes

Mike joins us for an impromptu Warhammer 40K lore chat and we discuss starting out in Elite Dangerous. Additionally, Dave and Mike recap the Sabaton gig in Dublin.

As Dave continues to point out, we couldn’t do the show without Bytemark’s BigV.  We thank them very much.

What are we drinking this episode? Mike’s enjoying Gammel Dansk, while Dave has a whole battery of drinks ready. Some are even in his lap. Fab’s enjoying pints of G&T made with The Duke. He prefers Centauri Mega Gin, whenever possible, though. Also: the seed bunker is real.

Before we even start the show proper, Mike manages to rathole it with a huge discourse on The Master of Mankind and the nature of the Imperium of Man. This includes interesting tidbits of how the Albigensian Crusade and Château de Montségur relate to the 40K universe.

We are nominated for the Linux Questions “Linux/Open Source Podcast of the Year” award. Even though we aren’t a Linux podcast by a long shot. It’s hilarious! In other news, PETA is going after Games Workshop because of all the animal skins on Warhammer models. We think they are actually serious as well. Comedy gold. You can’t make this shit up!

Dave and Mike talk about their trip to see Sabaton in Dublin. Mike accidentally discovers the perfect Sabaton concert shoes in the process.

Mike has bought Elite Dangerous and Fab tries to recruit him for the Hutton Truckers. We also talk about the upcoming character creator and multicrew features. In the meantime, Star Citizen is forging ahead as well.

We end the show with your feedback, which involves this graph.

Show Notes

Offshore Mike is back for a show all about Heavy Metal: where it came from, how it developed and where it’s at now. As a bonus, Fab reviews The Curious Expedition.

We review Sabaton’s The Last Stand and debate over what the best song on the album is.

The Last Stand

Fab talks about seeing Sabaton live for the first time at Elb Riot and we discuss what Heavy Metal actually is. What does it all mean?

Fab at Elb Riot

Dave then gives a whistlestop tour of the history of Metal: Blues, Rock, The Who and some broken amps, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Punk Rock, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Van Halen… Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal, Thrash Metal, Nu Metal, Deathcore, Metalcore, Retro-Metal and finally Djent.

We look at the worst Metal band logos and Dave mentions an album that is all lore. Mike and Dave think Fab would enjoy Avantasia.

The Chart

Mike poses that Metal is all about going to gigs. And he says it’s not all about angry, white young men either. He then gives his Top 5 Albums That You Didn’t Know You Needed In Your Life:

  1. Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath
  2. Painkiller by Judas Priest
  3. Somwhere in Time by Iron Maiden
  4. Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass
  5. …For Victory by Bolt Thrower

We then do the Sabaton Quizz!

To have something else besides Metal on the show (heresy!), Fab reviews The Curious Expedition which is a great game from two dudes in Berlin. He absolutely loves it! If you are German, he also recommends you read Kapitän Schwandt’s biography Sturmwarnung.

The Curious Expedition

We end the show by reading out your feedback. Including some more details on the Amazon Dash Button.

Show Notes

The winged hussars have arrived. On this GNR: Dave hates No Man’s Sky and Suicide Squad. And we discuss what makes a game.

Winged Hussars

We are back. And we explain why we didn’t podcast for a while. Well, Dave did. But it was on another show. We also hype on about Sabaton endlessly.

Fab’s taking part in the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Hamburg. Dave saw Suicide Squad and absolutely hated it. He did, however, love I Am Slaughter.

We then discuss No Man’s Sky. Which Dave absolutely didn’t like. Fab likes it a bit, but much prefers Elite. We also have a fight about if this is actually a game or not. We aren’t sure.

And as if all of that wasn’t enough bullshit, we also answer your questions.

Show Notes

Offshore Mike joins us for a nice long Black Library discussion, Dave reviews Huel, explains Bullet Journal and Fab rants about Star Trek Beyond.

First off: trouble is brewing at Cyanogen. In other sad news, The Expanse is not streaming on Amazon Prime in the UK. Of course not, because we can’t have nice things. To make things worse (or better, if you agree with Dave), Niantic has shut down third party Pokémon Go services. The bastards.

Dave remembers FOSS Talk Live and gives us a review of Huel. What a brave man. Apparently it tastes like cardboard with some extra grit mixed in for flavour.

We then discuss Bullet Journal, Passion Planner and wank on about notebooks from Leuchtturm 1917 and Analog.

Bullet Journal

Also: Operation Teapot. Wow.

Mike talks about the latest instalment in the Horus Heresy series, Angels of Caliban by Gav Thorpe and we philosophise if Luther is maybe not such a bad guy after all.

Mike finds out that he is not the greatest private detective in the world when he fails to guess Laurie Goulding’s email address to send questions about starship names to him. However, the questions have finally arrived with Laurie and we can hopefully present his answers in a future show.

We also discuss The Beast Arises.

To round out the show, Fab explains a lot of stuff that is wrong with Star Trek Beyond. For one thing, Idris Elba completely fizzles out under all that makeup. Well, at least we guess that’s Idris Elba…

We end the show with …you guessed it… feedback.
