Skyr Hipster

It’s a GDPR-themed episode this time on Geek News Radio. Buckle up, there will be rants. Dave’s mad about Ubuntu and Fab wants to blow the EU to pieces for this privacy crap.

Slippers has a new job and is turning into a hipster. He’s wearing linen and drinking skyr. He’s also been putting his recipes on GitHub. With tests! Fab thinks it’s all quark.

Fab does feel old.

Meanwhile, Dave reminds everyone that FOSS Talk Live is soon!

In the news, The Expanse is cancelled. But there is hope. Also: Fab recommends Little Steven’s Soulfire Live! album and is going to see Kiefer Sutherland in concert.

In the main section of the episode, we discuss Efail and Dave rants about a bug with the Ubuntu login screen.

Fab then launches a massive, nuclear rant on the GDPR.

We end the show with your sparse feedback.

Old Man Dave talks about Ubuntu 18.04 on the Dell XPS 13 and Lara Croft fanboy Fab talks about his experience at the premiere event for Shadow of the Tomb Raider. He also reviews BattleTech.

Fab has finally figured out why Dave’s audio was suboptimal for ages and it isn’t pretty – it turns out Fab’s an idiot. Speaking of annoying things: Dave gives an update on House Ownership 101.

Dave has bought a Dell XPS 13 and slapped Ubuntu 18.04 on it – by all accounts it’s going quite well. He’s also started using Atom to see if Fab’s completely mad for using it instead of Sublime Text.

Meanwhile, Fab was in London at the exclusive Shadow of the Tomb Raider premiere event. The game looks great, Fab’s very much looking forward to its release in September.

Until Shadow of the Tomb Raider arrives, though, Fab’s currently favourite game in the world is Battletech. It’s so fucking good!

We wrap up the show by answering your feedback. Including a scathing email from Listener No. 1 Niklas. It also seems Mike’s been busy stealing Bitcoins…

Can't Handle Torpedoes

Dave has been playing World of Warships and Fab reviews Subnautica. We also discuss how The Orville stacks up against Star Trek: Discovery.

Fab has started a German PC games podcast with his mate Martin. It is called Kantenglättung Deluxe. They are aiming to release a show every month.

FOSS Talk Live tickets are on sale right now. Dave will be there, Fab probably not since he’s a fucking slacker.

We start the show off with some news:

Firefox is starting to promote sponsored pages.

Ubuntu is collecting more user data and apparently everyone is outraged.

These flight sim devs are stealing your passwords if you pirate their planes. German story from Fab (falls du Deutsch sprichst).

In the next segment, we pitch Star Trek: Discovery against The Orville. We both like Discovery, but Dave isn’t very hot on The Orville. Surprisingly, Fab likes both series. They definitely have their flaws, though and we thoroughly talk through these.

Dave has been playing World of Warships and talks about his torpedo woes.

Meanwhile, Fab has put a good 30 hours in Subnautica so he reviews it. Not only is it beautiful, it also has a very engaging story told in a very reasonable way.

In other news, Fab has submitted a story pitch to Black Library.

As usual, we end the show with your feedback. Thanks for sending us messages!

Fab (played by Tom Hardy) and Dave (played by his Labrador).

Show Notes

This time around, Dave and Fab bring you a lot of hobby talk: Blood Bowl, Warhammer and White Dwarf. But they also talk tech news and spaceships.

Trump it is. We’re all screwed. The End Times indeed. In other bad news, the great Leonard Cohen has died.

There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in

Leonard Cohen

But we also have some good news: Season 2 of The Expanse is coming to Syfy on 8 February.

If you want to know what the current date in 40K notation is, Fab’s got you covered. Also: EVE Online is now free! Wooohoo! Maybe Fab will finally stick with it now. Their berets leave much to be desired, though.

In other news, hell has frozen over! And a Hello Games designer who used to work for Molyneux is combo-chaining clusterfucks, he has gone to work at Star Citizen.

Next, it’s hobby talk. There’s a brand new Warhammer community site and Total Warhammer is coming to Linux. We talk Blood Bowl and Fab reviews the November issue of White Dwarf. Meanwhile, GNR collaborator Joe Ward has been featured on the GW site as part of #PaintingWarhammer.

Dave is now a fan of Microsoft’s tech support. He’s not a fan of upgrading his Ubuntu server, though. Also: Ghost in the Shell.

As always, the show ends with your feedback.

Show Notes

After some slacking, we are back with politics and entertainment news. We also review FIFA 17 and Forza Horizon 3.

We open the show by discussing how dumb people are, especially on the internet. This is cause by Fab once again having an opinion – how silly of him. In happier news, Bob Dylan got a Nobel Prize but can’t be arsed to pick it up. Bless you, Bob! Also: Zesty Zapus.

In the meantime, No Man’s Sky is under investigation for its developers having fucking lied all the time. It also has the worst Steam rating ever. In sharp contrast, Wasteland 3 will probably deliver on most of its promises.

Dave reviews Forza Horizon 3. He reckons it’s the best racing game ever, so we discuss our views on the genre in general. Fab despairs that this shit is generally so fucking millennial. We also discuss Dave’s new car. And cars in general.

Best news ever: The Expanse is coming to Netflix! Season 2 is looking great.

Fab reviews FIFA 17. He thinks it’s the best FIFA yet, especially since they finally changed the damn engine. His only regret is that his home team is missing.

We end the show with your questions, featuring rollmops, the destruction of the bourgeoisie and Junkyard Sam’s amazing drawings.
